Ten Unique Gifts For Book Lovers

June 19, 2011 | Featured Miscellania

If you are looking for an interesting gift for the book lover in your life (or for yourself), I looked around and picked ten notable choices.  Sure, you can always give them (or yourself) a book, but why not do something unexpected?

——————–

Banned Book Bracelet:

If you know someone who hates censorship and wants to show it, then this is the perfect choice. This bracelet is comprised of square charms which feature the covers of several banned books, such as Huck Finn and The Color Purple.

——————–

Alice in Wonderland screen:

This canvas room divider features Alice speaking to the Caterpillar on the front, and Alice speaking to the Cheshire Cat on the back (with the original illustrations).  Better yet, you can customize the screen with a phrase of your choice, if so desired.

——————–

Shakespeare Pill Box:

This offering from the delightfully named Unemployed Philosophers Guild is a pill box with a picture of Shakespeare on the front and the quote, “By med’cine life may be prolonged, yet death will seize the doctor too.” Good for fans of Shakespeare and/or pills.

——————–

Famous Author Puppets:

Yet another great offering from the Unemployed Philosopher’s Guild, these finger puppets also double as refrigerator magnets. There are a wide range of authors to chose from (such as Ernest Hemingway, pictured above) as well as dozens of other historical figures.

——————–

Famous Author Figurines:

These three inch tall vinyl figurines come in a set of four: William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Mark Twain, and Edgar Allen Poe. Also included:  original artwork for the figures and biographical notes.

——————–

Famous Women Authors Umbrella:

This large umbrella features caricatures of Jane Austen, Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, Zora Neale Hurston, Virginia Woolf, Louisa May Alcott, Mary Shelley, and Charlotte Bronte.  This would be perfect for any lover of great literature (and a good gag gift for V.S. Naipaul).

——————–

Literary Tea Towels:

These lovely tea towels (or dish towels, for those in the US) really bring literature into the kitchen. There are a few different designs, but most consist of a passage from the book embellished with eye-catching illustration.

——————–

Out of Print Clothing T-Shirts:

This is one of my favorite things on this list. Out of Print is a 27-year-old clothing company that sells t-shirts featuring vintage book covers, from Origin of the Species to Lolita. What makes this company special is that for every t-shirt sold, they donate a book to a community in need. You get a unique t-shirt and help spread literacy, what’s to argue with?

——————–

In the Library Scent:

Naturally, this scent is meant to mimic the smell of a library. The description from the website reads: “In the Library is a warm blend of English Novel*, Russian & Moroccan Leather Bindings, Worn Cloth and a hint of Wood Polish.” It’s available as a perfume and a room spray.

——————–

It Was a Dark and Stormy Night Board Game:

If you like showing off your literary knowledge, then this is the game for you. Each card gives you the opening lines to a famous novel, and you must identify the name of the book. It’s suited for all levels of literature lovers.

——————–

I hope this gave you some good ideas for gifts for the bookworm in your life (or yourself). Happy shopping!

Awesome stuff.  It can be so hard to find great gifts for book lovers and bibliophiles, but these recommendations are great.  Thanks for posting!

You’re quite welcome! I tried to find things that a book lover would appreciate, but wouldn’t expect at the same time. (As an added bonus, now any friends, family, or admirers that read my site know what to get me for the holidays.)

  • Quotes of the Moment

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
    - Victor Hugo,

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
    ― Diane Setterfield

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
    ― Joyce Carol Oates
