“The Rose Bower” by Edward Burne-Jones

June 19, 2012 | Miscellania

In the late 1800′s, Edward Burne-Jones created a series of paintings titled “The Legend of Briar Rose”, inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Sleeping Beauty”. Each painting has a short verse that coordinates with it, penned by Burne-Jones’ friend, fellow artist William Morris. I decided to pick out just one painting in the series, “The Rose Bower”, but check out this website, The Earthly Paradise, if you want to see the rest. Enjoy.

The Rose Bower

Here lies the hoarded love the key
To all the treasure that shall be.
Come, fated hand, the gift to take
And smite the sleeping world awake.

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
    - Victor Hugo,

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
    ― Diane Setterfield

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
    ― Joyce Carol Oates
