Farewell, Ray Bradbury

June 6, 2012 | News

Late last night, prolific author and American icon Ray Bradbury died at the of 91. I’m tempted to make this post a long eulogy to the man and his works, but instead I am going to keep it short and sweet. I am going to leave you with one of my favorite Ray Bradbury quotes (and one of my favorite quotes in general). I think it demonstrates what was so important about him.

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”

Farewell, sir.

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
    - Victor Hugo,

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
    ― Diane Setterfield

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
    ― Joyce Carol Oates
