First Look at the Trailer for 2012′s Les Misérables

May 30, 2012 | News

Today, the first official trailer for the 2012 adaptation of Les Misérables was released. I have been cautiously excited ever since I first heard about this version. It has an impressive cast; Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amanda Seyfried, and so on. There was a possibility in the beginning that the movie was going to be shot in 3-D (ugh), but director Tom Hooper soon nixed that idea (yay!). The novel and the musical are beloved to many, rightfully so. The movie does not need to resort to gimmicks to get people interested. So, did the trailer live up to my expectations?

Yes, yes it did. Too many movie trailer nowadays give away too much about the plot, but this trailer did what I think all trailers should do: it teased. “I Dreamed a Dream” is perhaps the most recognizable song from the musical, making it the perfect selection to be featured in the trailer. Anne Hathaway may not be the most technically skilled Fantine I have ever heard (there have been a lot of great ones over the years), but I thought she still did an amazing job. It made the viewer eager to hear the other songs in the movie (or it made me eager, at least). I also loved how you get all of these brief flashes of action; you see Jackman as Valjean and Crowe as Javert, but you never get to hear them talk, let alone sing. This trailer leaves you wanting more, and that’s a good thing.

I am excited for December 14th.

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
    - Victor Hugo,

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
    ― Diane Setterfield

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
    ― Joyce Carol Oates
