Literary Blog Spotlight: Women Reading

May 21, 2012 | Musings

My latest website obsession is the aptly titled Tumblr page, Women Reading. It delivers what it promises; picture after picture of women reading. This concept takes many different forms, however. There are photographs of famous women reading, photographs of non-famous women reading, reproductions of famous paintings that feature women reading, and so on. It’s a lovely concept that is well executed, so I urge you all to check it out. I pulled a few examples from the page to entice you, but do go and look at the rest of them.

  • Quotes of the Moment

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
    - Victor Hugo,

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
    ― Diane Setterfield

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
    ― Joyce Carol Oates
