Thursday Tunes: The Novel Ideas

April 26, 2012 | Musings

The Novel Ideas may not be as well known as other Thursday Tunes subjects (Coldplay, U2, The Police, etc), but their music shows a love for literature all the same. On their 2009 album, The Sky is a Field, there is a track titled “Julian Carax”. Julian Carax is of course the protagonist of one of my all-time favorite novels, Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. The song retells the story of Shadow of the Wind rather faithfully, showing great understanding of the novel. It is definitely a must-listen for any Carlos Ruiz Zafón fans out there. (Give the rest of their music a listen while you’re at it.)

“Julian Carax” by The Novel Ideas

This book is much more trouble, more trouble than it’s worth
And fall in Barcelona is getting so much worse
Keep it to yourself now, what you say just cant be right
‘Cause I can’t walk alone now, where I walk the streets at night

Did you miss me?
Oh, when I fell from you
And you’re blind I know
But now I see you

My father, he’s no help now, I’ve got to do this on my own
‘Cause the devil he is tracing, the trail of pages sown
If he finds out what I have now, he’ll burn it on the spot
Come on, let’s stick together, Bea, you’ve all that I’ve got

And the rain’s so cold
But this mansion’s dry
Can we spend the night sleeping side by side?
And I’ll kiss you face
Keep you wrapped up tight
But there’s someone else
In this house tonight

Kiss me and leave me alone
Kiss me and leave me alone
Believe me, you’re all that I’ve got
Believe me, you’re all that I’ve got

Don’t leave me stranded here alone
I’ve been waiting here for this, I’ve been waiting here for this
(‘Cause I’m not the one you never left behind)
I told you that I’m going to die but I don’t want to die
(‘Cause now I feel just like I am a child)
In Paris, we can leave this all behind, we can leave this all behind
(And I haven’t felt this way in quite some time)

Kiss me and leave me alone
Kiss me and leave me alone

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
    - Victor Hugo,

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
    ― Diane Setterfield

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
    ― Joyce Carol Oates
