SNL Reveals The Secret Behind The Success Of Game of Thrones

April 16, 2012 | Musings

April 14th’s episode of Saturday Night Live was generally underwhelming (from my point of view), but one bright spot in the evening was a Game of Thrones-themed sketch. In it, the reason for the success of the series is revealed; it’s not George R. R. Martin, it’s not even Peter Dinklage– it’s an awkward teenager who insists on packing as much sex as possible into each scene. It’s funny, but something about the sketch does ring true. The book is chock-full of sex, but the show takes it even further. Sex that is merely implied in the book is played out onscreen (for example, Renly and Loras). I’m not complaining, it sure makes for an entertaining show!

I couldn’t find a link with an embedding code, so you will have to go to Gawker to watch it, but please do. It als features a great Kit Harrington/Jon Snow impression.

Happy watching!

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
    - Victor Hugo,

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
    ― Diane Setterfield

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
    ― Joyce Carol Oates
